Btwin 500 Beige - Best budget folding bike 2022

First bike I brought myself: Brought for commuting daily 15 miles within London, this does so very well, however the lights rear and front are a bit tacky although lightweight and simplicity in mind, it won’t last frequent night rides. The front light runs out of battery fast and goes red over 30minutes use. The rear light is ok and is anti theft. Problems: 1) At first the seat post kept slipping down bit by bit but this was due to tightness of seat post not being suitable for my weight. It is therefore recommended to ask the seat post to be tightened. 2) The brakes on the bikes squeaked and were not adjusted properly on collection as when folded the bike didn’t move. However this was corrected by staff who somehow tweaked and adjusted the brake cables also removing the bike squeaking thereafter. Therefore it raises suspicion on whether the sound is actually new brakes as they often told me. 3) The original Btwin 100 (black) had the problem of the seat post turning which this model does not have at all. After having the seat post tighten the problem of seat post slipping removed however the seat bracket is a lot more tight and difficult to then adjust height especially when needed to extend seat post to fold and move / store the bike Positive: 1) I’ve used this bike daily around London, over humps, uneven roads, rocky surfaces and fairly small potholes - with no problem at all, the tyres have lasted a month now and still going on. However I noticed small rocks were now digging into the tyre outer surface. 2) The bikes moves smoothly and the gear system will give a pleasant speed whether slowly or faster. I highly recommend the bike and to get a saddle of 90 increasing comfort and good for long term health. 3) The bike folds well and neatly. It can also be unfolded in seconds. Magnets are strong and it can be pushed along easily. 4) Well made lightweight frame and good rubber handles. 5) Good online service and store 6) Great bike services from stores Overall I am highly satisfied with purchase and service from Decathlon but I do find that the brakes need to be better explained and not just saying that new brakes causes squeaking sound as explained it can also be due to tight brake cables.

Very nice bike

Lightweight and rides well - doesn't feel disjointed like some cheaper folding bikes. Never had a brompton so cannot compare it to those but for the money, I am very happy with what this bike can do. A couple of niggles which dropped it from 5 stars however: The hinge was INCREDIBLY stiff at first, almost unmovable - I had to spray some silicone grease onto it and fold it a few times before it became possible to fold it within the 15 seconds advertised. The front wheel was not true and needed adjusting - not a big hassle but with the price, QA was lacking a little. The front break rubs a little still but am told this will improve as it gets used. Another slight negative is its never 100% stable when folded - being heavier one side, so be sure to have it leant against something to avoid it toppling.

Very nice bike.

This bike is wicked! I really enjoy riding it. It's comfortable, quiet and nippy. I bought pannier rack and front basket ( foldable one ) and it makes the bike so useful. Gears are good but brakes could be better. Lights that comes with the bike are a joke - absolutely useless plastic waste not suitable for purpose. Overall the bike is very good even for a long rides. Quick enough, very nippy and make me smile every time I ride

Tilt 500 (Orange)

I GOT THIS BIKE ON 31/2/22, it is 18/3/22 now, so I've had this bike just under a month. I needed a folding bike for my truck, as my old truck had room for a full sized bike on the back, where my new one doesn't. So the bike now stays in the cab with me under the sleeping bunk. I picked the 500 model because it has 7 gears and is a few kilos lighter than the 120. I'm glad I picked it, as lifting it in and out should be a little easier. I have just completed 300 miles on the bike and can honestly say its a cracking little machine. However its not all great. The front wheel amber reflector flew off going down a hill at about 20mph. I stopped and got it back, but to be honest I didn't bother to refit it. The front light was useless, so that came straight off, the rear light is even worse. The batteries keep shaking loose, so you can't rely on it. Its just a really poor design. The rear mudguard rubber flap fell off. This was just riveted on, so then the rivet that is left just rattles. I have since fixed this by bolting the mudflap back on. I was originally going to discard the mudguards, but they do a fantastic job, no streak of mucky water up your back or feet, so they are definately stopping on. The gear ratios are spot on, a bit harder than a mountain bike, but not bad at all. The seat adjustment was another reason I got this model, it has numbers on the stem, so when it comes out I know my setting is 27", and if the wife wants to use it, her setting is 9". Easy. I got a bag for the bike from Amazon, and it keeps the cab clean, and the bike scratch free. Its a shame Decathlon don't do a bag for it to go in. I have got some bike lights from my previous bike, so the lights aren't a big issue for me, but bear this in mind if you buy this bike. I can't say enough as to how poor these are on this bike. The longest single ride I have done on it so far is 32 miles, and it is pretty comfy, please note I do use cycle shorts with the chamois in when riding. Also Decathlon do a 3 month check on the bike for free, so even though Im a competent mechanic I'll be getting this done in the near future. Would I recommend it? Definitely. All in all it is a well designed bike, the components and frame seem well up to the job. The paintwork seems to be pretty thick and looks like it will last well. In fact, I got on my mountain bike the other week and it felt awful, really big, wide handlebars. I would have gone for the tilt 900, but it was just too much price wise for me at the time, but I'm really happy with the 500.

Convenient for flat/apartment life

Light enough to carry up flight of stairs and park in hallway. Early days but seems fine on road and short trips so far. Doesn't fit in my medium size car boot, would fit in a SUV size boot.

Good bike but…

There’s a lot to like about this bike. Solid build, small & compact when folded, light enough to carry around. I’m really enjoying it. When I made the initial purchase the bike was set up at my local store in West London by a staff member named Francesco who was really helpful and told me that if I had any issue or was not happy with something during the warranty I could bring the bike to the store and they would look at it. BUT forward to today, I have been having issues with the gears for a couple of weeks so brought the bike to the store where I was met by Nathaniel who doesn’t seem to like his job very much. He had an attitude of disdain to potential customers for asking him simple questions in front of me. He then had a look at my bike for around 3 minutes, tweaked the gears slightly and asked me to pay for it. I explained to him that I should have been told that I would have to pay and how much before he did anything and that I would not pay. He said “Fine, I’ll tweak it back the way it was then.” And he made it worse! So to conclude the review, really good solid bike for the price BUT abhorrent customer service.

Bike review

I bought this bike less than a month ago and it’s been great so far. It’s ideal for cycling in towns and cities, and it is easy to fold too.

Excellent

Not had a bike since I was a kid nearly 50y ago. Needed something to get fit. Excellent bike, very light but tough. Folds easily if required. Gears change smoothly and good ratios for the hills round here. Riding position and saddle pretty comfortable. Well set up by Bromley store.

Why buy a Brompton?

At this price I expected something just good enough. Far from it. I used to own a Brompton but wouldn't bother now. This is an excellent machine and a joy to ride. I especially like the wide range of gears and smooth operation of them. Outstanding value. I now leave my full size bike in the shed
