Buyer Beware!

This product seems to have a really chequered history, so watch out. I bought one of these maybe nine months ago. It appeared to be designed to be used on one side for 1-10 speed chains, and on the other for 11-12 speed chains (though it was printed as 10-12 - yes, that's pretty useless isn't it?). From the graphic on the tool, it appears that once the gauge lies flat on the chain, the chain should be replaced. This is different, to other tools such as the Park Tool gauge, which does not divide the two sides of the tool according to chain size, but the percentage of wear. I was rummaging recently through the packaging from bike tools that I had bought from Decathlon, and I was quite shocked to realise that the instructions on the packaging for my chain wear indicator bore no relation to the instructions printed on the tool! The instructions on the packaging read as if the BTwin gauge is a Park Tool gauge which measures percentage wear on both sides. I then read some of the reviews posted in various foreign languages, and realised that this fault has been very common. It appears that a new version of the tool has been issued where the markings on the tool match the instructions on the packaging. If you see this tool in a Decathlon store and it still has the 1-10 and 10-12 speed markings on it, then do not buy it! Since I cannot be sure what my faulty version of the tool is actually measuring, I shall chuck it in the metal recycling skip at my Local Authority recycling centre, and shall buy a Park Tool chain wear measuring tool. This is a good example of the old adage that in life you only get what you pay for. I doubt that Park Tool would have made such a mess of things. I guess Decathlon tools are cheaper for a reason, but not a very good reason...

Thank you for your comments regarding this chain wear indicator. I will forward this on to the team at Decathlon who mange this product. I agree that the instructions should be more accurate.

This chain wear indicator

I am usually satisfied with Decathlon products but this is the only time I have reason to review adversely. I have used this chain wear indicator for 6 months and wondered why my 11 speed chains, according to this, have shown to need replacing after on average 6 weeks. I don’t ride hard and only do about 600 miles in that time on the road bike. I maintain and lube after every other ride. I purchased 2 of these as l lost one, but on both of them, I found that when I placed the indicator on a new chain, the indicator showed the chain partially worn which I found strange but thought that was how it is. I then suspected it to give incorrect readings resulting in premature chain replacement and went to a shop to have it measured using a Park Tool CC-3.2 and realised that I have been discarding chains well before they needed replacing. I purchased a Park Tool chain wear indicator and I use this instead of the Decathlon product as it is not correctly sized. On this basis, I can not recommend this product and recommend the Park Tool indicator..

Thank you very much for giving us such valuable feedback regarding this chain wear indicator tool. I will forward this on to our team at Decathlon immediately as this requires some investigation.
Please feel free to return it to us for a refund or an exchange.
