warm and lightweight

I've never had a down coat before. this is my first. I'm really happy with it. I haven't used it hiking or camping yet, but I've warn it in some cold weather. Specifically waiting to pick up my kid at school. The other parents looked really cold. i was nice and warm. My only down side (pun intended) is that when i sit in a chair in the cold, since the down gets compressed, my back is cold. there's no isupation when the insulation is flattened. i don't know if this is a common thing with down jackets, but it's an issue with this one. Makes me feel the need to use a pad on my back when I sit in a chair.

Superior warmth; great price!

In order to test the effectiveness of a winter jacket I always test with only a thin t-shirt underneath. This enables me to test its effectiveness without the additional effect of layering. Today was 37 degrees with 10-15mph sustained winds. I sat on a hillside with no windbreaks for 30 minutes. (I want to know if a jacket will keep me warm with no physical activity.) This jacket provided superior warmth! I never had to put on the hood which would’ve made me even warmer. It’s definitely a winter coat and it would be too much coat for a warmer temp day. The fabric is very lightweight (which is why I purchased it) and I wouldn’t wear this coat while trekking through a wooded area where it might snag and tear. It would be perfect once you’ve arrived at camp. It would also make a great jacket for a cold winter walk or watching an outdoor winter sporting event where you are sitting and need to stay warm. This jacket is a great deal at this price point! (I own winter jackets at double this price point.). I highly recommend it!

Punches well above its weight

Would expect to pay 3-4 times as much for an equivalent jacket from a big name brand or cottage manufacturer. So happy with this purchase.

Mountain Trekking Down Jacket

We bought these jackets on the recommendation of a Canadian outdoor person. We have used them for over a month now during the previous colder weather in Mancheter. The jackets are warm with a good fit and well made with excellent zips and reinforced wear areas. They are exceptionally good for the price. We also have jackets from Rab & Mountain Hardware to compare.

Worth a look

Perhaps not finished as well as other brands. Will have to see what the longevity is. But this jacket is warm as toast. Does everything I want it to do. Very good

Amazing must have gear! (Warning at bottom)

Absolutely love this jacket . The hood adjustments don't use the normal toggle they sort of slot into the hood itself, that then holds them in place securely which is a great idea . Sat outside in light rain in -2 Celsius as was dry and toasty and walked home in slightly heavy rain with zero down clumping . It doesn't have rear head adjustments but the peak can be rolled up and it stays in place . Fantastic gear! Can't recommend this enough Heads up tho . I put the jacket inside out in my drier with tennis balls (do this with all my down jackets on low heat low spin) because one arm of the down arrived clumpy . When i pulled it out the inside has melted i suspect because this is such a lightweight item. Absolutely gutted especially with having no money at the moment and only had it about a week . Just hope the melted part holds up because i can't afford to buy another .

Excellent value coat

Great value, well made coat.

Very comfortable and warm

The jacket this well constructed with nice attention to detail; stitched lip around neck to prevent drafts, insulated storm flap behind main zip. Putting the jacket on instantly provides significant increase in warmth. While in light rain water will bead and run off the material, I would recommend getting a size suitable to put under an outer water proof shell, as opposed to having a larger fit that goes over all layers. The down in the jacket should be kept dry, and I would want this layer to be protected from the weather as when static in cold weather it will provide the bulk of my heat retention. Sizing is accurate, but I did drop from an XL to an L in order to fit this jacket under an outer water proof.

Great warm cost

Lovely warm jacket. Really like it a lot.

Top Jacket

For its price, this is a belting jacket, I spent a lot of time researching down jackets and chose to take a punt on this one and I haven't been disappointed..

Very poor quality

The coat itself warm but the quality is so poor. The material is wafer-thin (apart from the shoulders and hood) and the zip broken within 2 days of use.

Thanks for taking the time to review our Forclaz Trek 900 Down Jacket. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with this product, especially with the zip. We use YKK (a leading zip manufacturer) zips in this model to try and ensure reliability and durability, so hopefully the problem you have encountered is a rare one. I would invite you to return to your nearest store and i'm sure they can find a solution for you.

With regards to the thickness of the outer material, the objective is to keep this jacket as light and packable as possible for storage in a backpack whilst trekking, so it is necessary to keep the outer relatively thin, obviously whilst making it durable and keeping the price reasonable. We appreciate your feedback on this though, for future models perhaps we can look to improve this aspect of the jacket.

Thanks again for reviewing the product.

How warm is this down jacket?

This down jacket, worn as a 3rd layer, has been certified for an active comfort temperature of 0°F during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic long-sleeved T-shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 3 mph wind. We have also tested this model in "static" mode; the comfort temperature is 23°F in this case.

* what is rds certification?

Our traceability system lets us guarantee the origin of the feathers in accordance with our commitment to use responsible materials. Our suppliers commit to using only feathers from ducks raised for their meat and plucked after slaughter. We have been awarded RDS certification (Responsible Down Standard) by a 3rd-party organization.

How to measure the fill power of a down and feather fill?

The fill power is a measure of the down's thermal insulation capacity and its potential to "trap" air. It is expressed in CUIN (cubic inches). So, down with a higher fill power (higher CUIN number) will occupy more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation. For this down jacket with its 85% down/15% feather fill, the fill power is guaranteed to be 660 CUIN or more (European standard).

Weight of the fill

XS: 6.7 oz S: 7.1 oz M: 7.4 oz L: 7.9 oz XL: 8.3 oz 2XL: 8.8 oz

The advantages of a duck down and feather fill

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain sports: - Thermal insulation provided by the air trapped in the down and feathers - Ultra-lightweight: down is lighter than synthetic padding while offering the same degree of warmth. This saves even more weight in your backpack - Ultra-compressible

How to care for a down and feather jacket?

The down jacket can be worn throughout the winter and will certainly need to be washed. Follow our guidance by clicking on the link below: In brief: 1/ machine wash, 86°F, with 2 or 3 tennis balls. Gentle spin cycle. 2/ tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls, repeat 2 or 3 times until it is completely dry

In case of rain

The material of the down jacket is water-repellent. It lets drops of water roll off the fabric, delaying water from getting in the jacket and giving you time to find shelter. The shoulders and hood of the down jacket are waterproof as they are more exposed to the rain. We nevertheless recommend wearing a waterproof jacket over the down jacket in the event of prolonged exposure to the rain.

Water-repellent property of component (not to be confused with waterproofing)

The water-repellent property of a fabric is its capacity to make water run off its surface without absorbing it. As a result, the fabric does not soak up water and stays light and warm. The fabric is made water-repellent by treating its outer surface; however, this property may deteriorate with use. We recommend that you restore it after each wash

How to restore water-repellent properties?

Follow the guide: We recommend that you use the wash-in care product It restores the water-repellent properties of the fabric and optimizes the performance of your garment throughout its lifetime.

Reducing the risk of feather loss

The main stitching of the compartments containing the down and feathers are heat-sealed to prevent the loss of feathers
