Quechua MH500

Waterproof! Which is all I wanted. Shouldn't be that hard, should it? This jacket is far superior to a similar product I purchased from a competitor for a similar price. That last product was never waterproof and the Quechua MH500 absolutely is. Rolls up very small which is ideal for travel, bushwalking and 4WDing.

I had the old model of this jacket, updated recently with this one and after 4 weeks using it I'm really happy with the product

Excellent jacket

Great jacket, really comfortable to wear as it is slightly stretchy so moves with you. Rain beads off it well and it seem to breathe well, although I have yet to do anything too strenuous while wearing it. Definitely worth the money, especially when you compare it to the competition and products twice the price are no where near as good.

Replacing my 20 year old Gortex

Lightweight and well priced. My beloved gortex jacket's seams had all delaminated due to age. This puppy will do the trick. Also, love the colours

Great product

Very happy with this raincoat. I've used it for a few month, and never got wet, even after more than 30 minutes of heavy rain. I use it both in Shanghai, to cycle around when it rains, or during hikes. It's relatively breathable and also looks quite good for a Decathlon product. - Only drawback : the sleeves are a bit long, and I have long arms. But when it rains, you're happy to have your under layer well covered, so I don't know what to think about that. Maybe 2cm shorter would be better ?

Pocket ripped

Had the jacket for around 2 years and the pocket ripped. Should have lasted longer for the price. Apart from that a nice jacket.

Excellent Jacket

I've used this 10s of times over the last 2-years and it is still as good as new. Completely waterproof

great jacket

I bought this jacket a couple of years ago now and it was great for travelling , lightweight, could roll up into a rucksack, looked smart and casual. It kept me dry and with a light fleece underneath, warm also. I unfortunately left it at a hotel when I was passing through Madrid and it was lost. I have looked at the replacement and they seem to have changed the design , which I cant comment on as I haven't replaced the jacket as yet

Leaks badly in heavy rain

Nice fitting and good looking jacket. Useless when rain is heavy or when in rain for more than 10 minutes. It just soaks up heavy rain leading to complete wetting out, all undergarments getting wet. Not dependable for a real hike.

Great hiking jacket

Great fit and functionality, ideal in wet weather.

Spot on so far

I’ve only used this to commute back and forth to work so not had a chance to really test out the breathability on the trails but it’s been absolutely bang on so far, great job.

Additional recommended products

Forclaz Rain overpants for protecting the lower body to complete an effective rain protection outfit designed for mountain walks. Care products: waterproof spray or liquid in the machine, to renew the fabric's water-repellent properties and optimize performance throughout the lifetime of your garment.

Waterproof component

We measure the resistance of a fabric to water pressure expressed in mm of water column (test based on Standard ISO 811). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Components with a 2,000 mm rating can withstand the pressure of a 2,000 mm column of water (which is equivalent to a rain shower lasting 2 hours).

Impermeability of the garment

This garment was approved in a shower test in 26 gallons of water/sqm/hour for 3 hours. This test reproduces the conditions of a violent storm in the mountains.

Component breathability

In addition to breathability of the fabrics used, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, ventilation, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its backpacking jackets and overpants designed for great hiking use (Forclaz, Bionnassay and Helium lines). These ventilation systems allow both temperature regulation inside the garment and help wick away perspiration generated by the body during exercise.

Component with coating or a membrane

The coating is like a layer of "paint" applied on the underside of the fabric to make it waterproof while remaining breathable. It is often less costly than a membrane, and requires a lining for protection. The membrane is like a very fine plastic film (polyurethane) making the component waterproof while remaining breathable. It has the advantage of being more supple, lightweight, durable and often more breathable than the coating.

Component 3 layers, 2 layers or 2.5 layers

3 layers: the membrane is bonded between the outer and inner layer of the component. This construction helps the membrane last longer and boosts the component's performance. 2 layers: the membrane is only bonded to the outer fabric; the inner protective lining is free. This construction costs less but is generally more cumbersome. 2.5 layers: the membrane is protected on the inside by a kind of varnish coating rather than an actual layer to make it as lightweight as possible

Component water resistance

A fabric is water-repellent when it allows water to slide over its surface without seeping in. This prevents the fabric from swelling and keeps it lightweight, breathable and warm. A fabric becomes water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment's lifetime (with every 3 washes). All Quechua waterproof jackets have received a water-repellent treatment.

A score for comparing products' environmental impact

The product's environmental impact is calculated over its entire lifecycle using different indicators. A score ranging from A to E is attributed so that you can easily identify the products with a better environmental performance compared to products of the same type (T-shirts, pants, backpacks,...). Decathlon totally backs the environmental labeling approach. For further information: http://sustainability.decathlon.com/
