Product Customer Reviews

Good mix of tailored fit and warmth. would say fits more like the RC500 range than Van Rysel jerseys etc.
Very disappointed to order (and I spend a lot with decathlon on a regular basis) to find within a short space of time the price was reduced by £20!
Been using for couple of months…. Warm and windproof… Very good fitting…
Close fit which helps with moisture wicking. Just went for a 40 minutes intensive ride at +4C and moderate wind to test it. Was wearing only two light layers under - sleeveless base layer and long sleeved one and neck gaiter. It was not too hot pedalling uphill warm Going downhill at around 60kph. I really like pockets in the back and sides, one of the reasons I went for this jacket. Would have been awesome if the long tail could be hidden inside like on the rain jacker, other than that no cons so far. Size size I usually wear size Medium (176cm /80kg) but this comes small so went for Large. I do recommend it for sportives and Long week-end rides and if I was going for a leisure pace ride at the same temperature, I would put on long sleeve jersey instead of the second base layer.
Pros: looks good and fits well. Cons: it's either too hot or too cold as there is very little insulation and as previous reviews state the neck is far to big allowing air straight in. When it heats up breathability is so poor you overheat very quickly and "boil in the bag". A real shame as I was expecting a quality jacket, but unfortunately it's been a total waste of £60!!
Used this for a sportive. It’s good at keeping the chill off on the descents and when it was dry it was fine. Had to put a thin wind proof top on as well when it started raining to keep a bit of extra heat in.
perfect for me
Very good quality, great fit,and very well priced.
I have now used this jacket ‘in anger’ having bought it a few months ago. The Strava temp was 8degC, feels like 4degC, with a 35km/h SSW wind with snow at the roadside. I wore a merino base layer, this jacket and a light gilet on top. The jacket is a tight fit, not relaxed. I am 173cm tall and 106cm chest and wear a Large. It performed Brilliantly!!
This too is phenomenal. I've worn it now in temperatures just below zero and it kept me warm and dry. The wicking effect is amazing keeping you dry underneath. The only thing I wish would fit a bit better is the neck, its not as close fitting as other makes but you pay more than twice the price. I've found the newer range of triban and van rysel clothing is more than matching names like Castelli for a fraction of the price. Fantastic top.
Great value this jacket. Nice snug fit. Feels like a more up market jacket although it’s in expensive. It has many back pockets which are nice and deep too. All I would say is it doesn’t have a huge amount of neck protection but if you wear a snood you’ll be fine. Also comes up a touch small. Opt for larger size unless you like your stuff fitted fitted.
Very disappoint in the sizing of this garment. I recently purchased 3 various Van Rysel and Triban tops from Decathlon, but the RCR softshell is a completely different kind of sizing. To explain, I purchased RCR winter Softshell, RC900 Triban Merino Wool jersey and Team Windproof gilet all for colder weather and all XL according to Decathlon sizing guide, while the RC900 merino jersey and gilet are perfect and plenty of room for undergarments, the Softshell is very, very tight to the point of been barely able to zip it and far too short (feels like a straight jacket). Going to order 2Xl, but feel even a 3XL should be available. It a pity I could not include picture to should sizing. The material and over garment look really good for price, shame about sizing.
Ok
I bought this jacket with some hope that it would be at least as good as an older Decathlon jacket that had finally given up after about 4 years of great service. My expectations have been exceeded by some margin! My rides have been a mix of dry and torrential rain, between about 5 degrees and 15 degrees and up to 90km. It is lightweight for those who don't like too much insulation and the fit is on the snug side as usual with this kind of jacket. At 1.80m tall, 85kg and broad shoulders, the XL is perfect for me, which is consistent with the big brand cycling kit competitors. With minimal base layers, never more than a wicking t-shirt and a thin merino wool layer, it has been just about right. Above 15 degrees or in bright sunshine I feel it may be too warm, but moisture wicks away very well. When caught out in an unexpected downpour, it performed surprisingly well and only leaked at seams and zips. The large number of pockets is a great feature for long rides where you may need to carry extra kit/tools/food and the bumflap helps with spray. I haver the petrol blue colour which is very striking, other colours were out of stock locally, I hope this is a jacket that runs for more than 1 season as I fancy getting another in a different colour.
Great fit - one star. Great material - one star. Massive flaw - the collar is far too wide essentially making the jacket useless for the winter as the wind will just flow straight onto the chest even with a buff or snood.

Bold design choices
Sometimes being bold means being different. At Van Rysel, we are driven by performance. And for a winter jacket, that means keeping you warm, of course, but without making compromises. No compromises on warmth, with Kima Toplight, a material that is thin, light, and windproof. No compromises on breathability with Matrix, a highly breathable material used on the upper back and underarms. No compromises on aerodynamics, a thin, close-fitting jacket with a long-tail design.
"long tail" design
As you can see in these photos, we decided to make the jacket longer in the back. The reason is simple: to protect your cycling tights and your backside from road spray. Another advantage is that we were able to position the pockets lower so that you don't have to twist your arm to put something in or take something out while cycling.
What is the pro fit design?
Pro Fit is a cycling garment design from Van Rysel. It's a design made for high-performance cyclists who want cycling clothes that are close-fitting without being constricting. This jacket is designed to be worn over a technical base layer. If you plan on wearing it over 2 layers, we recommend buying 1 size larger than your usual. Our Pro Fit design is for those cycling regularly. If you think you might need a jacket with a bit more volume, buy 1 size larger than your usual.
Details that make the difference
This jacket stands out with the attention we've given to every detail. - A flap for the lower zipper so that it doesn't damage your cycling tights. - A flap for the top zipper so that it doesn't irritate your neck. - Soft sleeves with elasticated cuffs - Small cords on the zips to make it easier to grab them when wearing gloves
Pockets
This jacket is made with 7 pockets. 2 small side pockets that can also serve for trash. A set of 5 back pockets that include: - 2 pockets for snacks or small items - 1 zip pocket for phone/key/card - 1 net pocket for gloves, hat, or other accessories.
Technical specs
100% Polyester RET < 12, and an air permeability rating of 4/5. Main component: 6.5 oz/m²
Which jacket should you choose?: racer or racer xtrem?
These 2 jackets are very different. The Racer weighs 12 oz whereas the XTREM weighs double that at 1.5 lbs. The Racer is a close-fitting jacket that is very effective for riding in spring, autumn, or mild winter weather. But in temperatures below 45°F, it starts to show its limits, and that is when we turn to the XTREM. Note that these jackets are water-repellent, not waterproof. So we recommend taking along an ultralight rain jacket if there is a chance of rain.
Care tips
In order to keep your jacket looking impeccable year after year, we recommend that you machine wash it with an 86°F synthetics cycle. Close the zippers before washing your jacket. Don't tumble dry, and don't use fabric softener! Don't dry clean it either. Line dry it in a well ventilated area.
