Forclaz MT 500 jacket

Excellent winter jacket: well-filled and warm but allows movement; three external zipped pockets plus two internal. Soft high collar and adjustable hood. Only wish would be the addition of a two-way front zip.

perfect jacket

I originally bought the MT 100 which if I'm honest was a very good jacket but I thought for a little extra id like to try the MT500 . so I did and I'm so glad I did . perfect jacket, really warm and beautifully made . I'd never spend ££££s when you can get the same for under a £100 . not sure about water repellent as I will not be using it in the rain

Mens MT500 Padded and Hooded Jacket

After significant research, viewing numerous online videos and reading all the positive reviews online I decided to purchase the MT500. I wanted to use this on dog walkers during the colder months and was aware that it wouldn't stand up to major downpours but that it would provide excellent warmth, which was my main criteria. As a result I had great expectations in relation to this jacket. I am disappointed to report that it isn't that warm. I live in the south east so it never gets really cold but over past few weeks I would expected this jacket to cope with the temperatures we have seen. The lowest on my walks has been anywhere between 2-5 ℃ and so far and this jacket has performed very poorly, even with wearing a couple of layers underneath. It's a shame because it is well made and I really like the colour but for it to not stand up to above average season norm in terms of temperatures that we are seeing in the south east is poor especially when its rated at -10 ℃. Price was obviously a factor in consideration of my purchase but for £90 it should have performed much better.

How warm is this padded jacket?

This padded jacket, worn as a 3rd layer, has been certified for an active comfort temperature of 14°F (-10°C) during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic long-sleeved T-shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 3 mph wind. We have also tested this model in static mode. Its comfort temperature is 0°C in this case.

The advantages of a duck down and feather filling

The filling power of down has 3 advantages for mountain sports: - Thermal insulation thanks to the air trapped in the down and feathers.- Ultra-lightweight: down is lighter than synthetic wadding while offering the same degree of warmth. This saves even more weight in your backpack.- Ultra-compressible.

How to measure the fill power of a down and feather wadding?

The fill power is a measure of the down fts thermal insulation capacity and its potential to InchtrapInch air. It is expressed in CUIN (cubic inches). So, down with a higher fill power (higher CUIN number) will occupy more space, trap more air and provide greater thermal insulation. This puffer jacket, filled with 90% down and 10% feathers, has a guaranteed fill power of 800 CUIN (international standard) or over.

Weight of filling

XS: 122 g S: 131 gM: 140gL: 149 gXL: 159 g2XL: 170 g3XL: 181 g4XL: 192g

How to care for a down jacket?

The down jacket can be worn throughout the winter and will certainly need to be washed. But the less you wash it, the more it will retain its thermal insulation and water repellency. Our advice: 1/Machine wash with a detergent suitable for down or technical garments, at 30°, with 2 or 3 tennis balls. Gentle spin cycle. 2/ tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls, and repeat 2 or 3 times until it is completely dry.

Water-repellent property of component (not to be confused with waterproofing)

The water repellent property of a fabric is its ability to make water run off its surface without absorbing it. This prevents the fabric from swelling, and keeps it lightweight and warm. The fabric of this down jacket is water repellent, however, we recommend that you wear a waterproof jacket over it in the rain. The fabric is made water-repellent by treating (PFC-free) its outer surface, however this property may deteriorate with use. We recommend that you restore it after each wash.

How to restore the water-repellent properties?

Once you have cleaned your padded jacket, we recommend you use a water-repellent reactivator spray to preserve the hydrophobic properties of the outer fabric. This renews the fabric’s water repellent properties and optimises its performance throughout the lifespan of your garment.

A snag? how to repair your fleece

A tear on a padded jacket can happen when trekking! The good news is that it can be repaired with a repair patch to prevent the tear from getting bigger or feathers from escaping. We have repair patches that you can purchase!

Product testing

4 independent Forclaz trekkers and 4 members of Forclaz tested this down jacket during 3 days of trekking in November 2021 up to 9842 ft. altitude near Chamonix in the Mont Blanc Country. The feedback given to us after this test let us validate this down jacket for mountain trekking.
