Followup to my earlier review

I wrote an earlier review of this pack last year and want to follow up on it now that I've used it a bit. Its definitely held up and exceeded my already high expectations.. I've used it for a number of day hikes, and with extreme pack discipline even a few summer 1-2 night overnighters where I cowboy camp. It has enough room for a lightweight sleeping pad, rain jacket, and emergency bivy, plus an extra set of layers, a puffy, water filter, and a couple days of food, 1st aid and other essentials. With shoulder strap water bottle holders that I added I can use the side pockets for extra snacks. I also recently used it for a week on the Camino in December and it was perfect. Its extremely well built and comfortable, seams durable, has well thought out pockets for storing maps, passport, etc, and the overall design is great. In this size pack--20L I don't know of another brand, even the better known ones like Osprey, Lowe, etc, that have a 20L "daypack" with such a substantial hip belt and packframe so that it can be used for minimalist overnight trekking. This pack is a true winner. I hope that mine lasts many years as I expect it to-- its already festooned with several patches from my trips, and I also hope Decathlon keeps it around for a while. I don't know what the 30L or 40L versions are like, but met several people on the Camino this past December with the 30L version and they were as happy as I am with the 20L so I can only assume its a good a pack for people wanting something with a bit more space than 20L

Very Happy Hiker

I'm really happy with my purchase. The Mountain Walking Quechua Backpack is very comfortable, I love the style, I love the shove it pockets and it's just practical and functional. As a personal preference I'm not usually a fan of synch style packs but the side zip access into the main compartment eliminates the issue of that personal preference.

great day pack!

got this pack for Christmas and have put about 100km on it in the last few weeks. From Provincial trails to Back woods orienteering. This pack has been comfortable and sturdy. the added rain cover has been super handy as here on the East Coast of Canada we can have all 4 sessions in a matter of hours.

Outstanding value

By far the best value rucksack under €50, this rucksack is more like a 30L in carrying capacity. It has an internal tubular metal frame which I've found can support 15-20kg, and a protective pad to stop sharp objects poking through into your back. The shoulder straps and hip belt are fairly thickly padded, and there are lots of adjustment points for cinching up the load close to your body when climbing/scrambling and loosening it for back ventilation when walking on gentler terrain. I've found the side adjustment straps with the buckles are also useful for attaching gear; I've used them to carry ropes, mountaineering boots and trail runners for example. This bag has lots of options for storage and compartmentalising your gear. I can access the top lid and the stretchy side pockets without having to take off the bag, and the hip belt pockets are excellent for carrying all manner of small items. The main compartment has a pouch for a water bladder which can accommodate my 3L, and the tube can be secured under stretchy fabric loops on the shoulder straps. There is a small zipped pocket that "floats" just above the water bladder pouch. The large side zip makes accessing stuff at the bottom of the main compartment easy, and the thinner front compartment accessed through a zip on the opposite side is great for carrying slim items like maps and emergency bivvy bags. The stretchy front pocket of the bag is great for carrying a variety of items, and if your shoulders are mobile enough you can reach around and access this without having to take off the bag. It has stretchy cord attachments on one side for carrying hiking poles which also work for an ice axe; you can secure the pick of the axe in one of 2 attachment loops at the bottom of the bag. These are perfect for attaching light, bulky items like sleeping bags or ground mats using carabiners or accessory cord. The only issue I find is with the venting mesh on the back, which doesn't work when the bag is cinched tight. The mesh is not taut enough to effectively separate the bag from your back. If you can only afford one rucksack for a variety of mountain sports taking place over 1-2 days, this is the one to buy. It has lots of thoughtful features and an intelligent design that can accommodate hiking, scrambling, and mountaineering. Given that it's not designed as a technical rucksack, it performs excellently at carrying technical gear. The only thing to bear in mind if using it with a harness is that the hip belt will not sit comfortably above the harness and may obstruct access to the gear loops, so it's best to fasten the hip belt behind your back to keep it out of the way. This isn't a knock on the bag, however, as it's designed to be a hiking rather than mountaineering rucksack. It also isn't large enough to carry enough gear for winter camping of any length or summer camping trips longer than 1 night, but again it isn't designed for either of those purposes.

Why did you have to spoil an already great product

In general I am one of the biggest Decathlon fans you can meet. The backpack is not too bad, but compared to it's predecessor is lacking behind big time. I still have it's predecessor QUECHUA FORCLAZ AIR 20 + which is a state of art, functionality and sturdiness. The new one is much more narrow and very difficult to fill in and leaving less capacity. I just tested today with transferring shopping from the old one into the new one and the new one had problems fitting in all the things the previous one could, although both are 20L. Ventilation on the new one also does not seem as good as the previous model. The pockets on the side of the backpack are pretty much useless as you cannot afford to put anything of value or you don't want to chase down the slopes after it falls out. Is there any way I can purchase another QUECHUA FORCLAZ AIR 20 + ? It was one of the best backpacks I've had and seen and I am not sure why and how we got to this stage. Apologies for the grim review, but I am really disappointed when a good product gets worse. I have still not made up my mind about returning it altogether. BR, Yordan

Decent but not suited to smaller heights

It's generally a great bag with plenty of great features. My main issue that means I'll have to sell this bag, is that the back cannot be adjusted for my size 5ft 3. The arm straps therefore will never be suited to my body and thus the bag is unfortunately not going to work out as its putting all the weight on my shoulders and making me very unbalanced

Value for money

Amazing value for money. I’m so pleased with this backpack. Originally was looking to buy more expensive brand that would cost me £120 but this backpack has everything I need for a hiking day trip. Opening from the top as well as side zip which is handy for quick access. Waste side pockets are great. Can be used for a mobile phone or high energy snacks so you don’t have to stop to find it inside the bag. I didn’t understand the angular drinks side pocket at first but when I started to use it it makes perfect sense. Again, you can access your drink without stopping to get a drink. For those who like a water bladder there’s a space for it inside. Hiking pole straps are strong and hold both poles easily. Chest strap can move up and down depending on your comfort. The only disappointing feature this backpack is that is missing is a whistle at the chest strap (unless I’m blind). Don’t think I would get this backpack if I hadn’t seen it in a shop and tried it on. Make sure you buy the right size as they do small and large depending on your height!

10-year guarantee

We take care over abrasion resistance to make your bag durable. The heavy clothing R&D department, a Quechua partner for the research and validation of its components and assemblies, performs tests (on components, seams and the finished product) simulating the ageing of backpacks. Their results allow us to guarantee the bags tested for 10 years from the purchase date shown on the receipt.

Don't throw it, fix it!

Our products will join you on your mountain walks. As you progress, they age, and some parts can get worn or break. To make repairs easier, in the ”Bag accessories / hiking trekking”, we sell tightening buckles and chest clips that are compatible with your bag. Don't throw away, repair !

What differences are there with the old mh500 bag?

The back of this new bag has been fully reworked for greater comfort: a tight net with frame gives you more space between your back and the bag to reduce the damp back effect. This net used for the back, called mesh, is also softer than previously. What's more, this new model comes in 2 sizes for small and large sizes. The 2 hip pockets are more spacious and stretchy and access to flask on the sides is easier.

Which size should i choose?

During several field test sessions with hikers of different sizes, we noticed that between 20 and 40 litres, the difference in comfort was mainly down to the back height of the bag. We therefore offer all our models in 2 sizes to meet these requirements. If you are taller than 170 cm, go for size L. If you are shorter than 170 cm, you will be better off with a size S.

Hydration

This bag can hold 1 litre, 2 litre or 3 litre pockets. However, although the pocket is voluminous, it will take up place that could be used for storing other belongings. The side pockets are designed for flasks of maximum 1 litre.

Why are our rain covers orange?

This is a deliberate choice as we believe it's important to stay visible in the mountains, even in fog, in case of any problem. This orange colour has the advantage of being visible from a helicopter. It's also a visible colour on the road if you use your bag when cycling.

Hand luggage

When you are travelling by plane, the authorised hand luggage size is 55x35x25cm3 maximum (warning, this can vary depending on the airline). This bag can be used as hand luggage, so long as you don't load the top too much.

How do i adjust my backpack?

1 - Loosen all the straps (straps, hip belt, load adjuster straps). 2 - Put the backpack on. 3 - As this bag is small in volume, put the belt around the waist and tighten it. 4 -Tighten the shoulder straps. 5 - Adjust the load adjuster straps as needed.

How to pack my backpack?

AT THE BOTTOM of the bag, pack your sleeping material, and heavy material nearer the back. Slide your water pocket into the compartment.AT THE TOP of the bag, store your waterproof jacket and fleece within arm’s reach. In the pockets, you can put your sun cream, maps, cap and sunglasses. Cereal bars or your mobile phone can be stored in the belt pockets for quick access. The straps under the bag can also be used to attach a compact tent.
