Question:

Which bag size is recommended for a 4 day trip? 50L or 75L

Answer:

For a 5-day hike, you'll want a medium to large backpack, usually between 40 to 80 liters. This size gives you enough room to pack essentials like a tent, sleeping bag, food, extra clothes, and other gear you'll need. It's important to choose a backpack that's water-resistant, especially if you might face bad weather. Look for one with a rain cover or made of waterproof material to keep your stuff dry. Also, if you'll be carrying your backpack for long walks, consider getting one with a built-in hydration system. This makes it easy to drink without taking your water bottle out of your backpack.

Can do better

Easy to store bag, with lots of compartments. However, I find that it does not suit my body shape, and breaks my hips, so the bag was working on my back.

Good bag but…

I used it for 2 treks and I regularly use it to go on weekends as my only luggage and I put my belongings in it as well as those of my two children. I find it relatively complete for organizing storage. Big downside in my opinion: the comfort of the bag... very sore shoulders after a day of 20km to the point that my hands quickly find themselves under the straps to avoid friction on the front of the shoulders. (Average weight on trek: 14kg). Otherwise, big positive point: very good quality fabric (I "abused" it a lot while trekking and no signs of wear). Less good quality for the waterproof cover which was not mistreated but which quickly cracked. I would like to point out that I do not recommend this bag but only for comfort after a very long day of hiking.

A very good bag.

A very good bag.

I'm satisfied

I used it during my Lycian Way walk in the first week of May 2023. I was satisfied. Lightness is very important, but I bought 70 liters so that everything could be inside the bag and nothing would shake from the outside.

Because of lack of compartments whenever a good amount of stuff is packed the front zip gets opened up thats why used it just once.

Capacity

70 L volume. The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardised method. we use small balls to fill the main compartment as well as each pocket. The balls are then emptied into a graduated container in order to determine the equivalent volume in litres, with a margin of error of just a few %.

Dying process

Textile dyeing requires a lot of water but also produces waste water from the dye baths. To reduce this environmental impact, we have opted for mass pigmentation called Inchdope dye Inch integrating the colour pigments from the initial thread manufacture. This process reduces this backpack’s CO2 emissions by 35% compared to the previous model.

How to pack a backpack?

Put your bedding at the bottom. Put heavy gear (tent, camp stove, food) near your back. Store your clothing around it. A groundsheet or tent can be placed under the flap or under the bag if there isn't room inside. Keep your waterproof jacket and fleece to hand. Place small items for daily use (sun cream, map, glasses etc.) in the pockets. The water bladder can be placed in the compartment provided down the back.

Why are our rain covers grey when some trekkers want them to be brightly coloured?

The grey colour is neutral so uses less dye. We also use a “bi-ton” dyeing process where only one thread in every two is dyed. This dyed yarn is also made from a bulk dyeing process which incorporates the colour pigments from the yarn manufacturing phase onwards. Forclaz is committed to improving the environmental impact of its products through these actions.
