About this item:

  • This backpack is made for multiple days hiking or trekking in autonomy. You can carry everything you need to camp, drink and eat on your back with comfort.
  • The MT500 AIR only weighs 3.7 lbs and can contain a total volume of 50 liters which we recommend for a trip over 2 weeks long. The top of the bag is adjustable and can hold an extral 10 liters of volume.
  • This backpack has plenty of features if you are looking for a technical option at a fair price: AIR concept back ventilation, rain cover, water bottle holder, hiking poles holder, 8 pockets and a compartment for a water bladder for easy hydration.
  • The AIR concept: in order for your back to dry faster, we added a mesh on top of a ventilated structure. Ideal for long and sweaty day hikes from one camp to another !
  • This is a men's backpack: This bag has been conceived for a masculine morphology (torso and hips). We recommend to stick to your gender when you choose a bag for comfort purposes when carrying it on your back.
  • 10-year warranty: the fabric of the bag is ultra resistant and Decathlon is proud to offer this warranty for any defect that could appear in the next 10 years.

The backpack's carrying system has a serious flaw

Unfortunately, although the backpack is solid, it has one drawback that makes me want to return it as soon as possible (although I can't). The backpack's carrying system is designed in such a way that the frame at the very bottom of the backpack creates a space/gap that cannot be accessed other than by disassembling the entire system, which is very cumbersome. Why am I writing about this? I traveled around Asia and it turned out that something else can get into this space very easily. Everyone who has visited Asia at least once has had to deal with cockroaches, and one such cockroach climbed to the very bottom of the frame and died. After a few days, the backpack could only be disassembled and washed. I can also imagine that I put my backpack on the beach and a lot of sand pours into it, and it just won't spill out completely. We may also spill something sweet and again - the entire supporting system needs to be dismantled. Unfortunately, this drawback makes the backpack unsuitable for traveling wherever it is warm, humid and you have to be careful not to include anything unwanted in your equipment. It is also not suitable for dirty terrain. First completely unsuccessful purchase in decathlon :/

There is a…

There is a plastic "hook" for attaching car keys in the top pocket, it seems to me that one should be in a belly pocket in order to open the car without putting the bag down, in the snow or the mud when you come back from hiking

Very good bag but a little expensive

Not thick enough, loss of space to gain filling, forced to pile up from bottom to top and impossible to add a water bag because there is no more space.

I have not walked or hiked with this bag, but the first thing that caught my attention ,was that large Velcro on the opening on the very handy back flap, it is so noisy .Imagine on the Camino you try to be quite in the dorm and have to deal with that noise.Maybe a narrow strip will do the job? The water bottle poch is perfect for getting to your hydration with out having to remove your pack which I found a problem with previous bags when there is no one to ask for help

Capacity

The bag has a 50 L capacity with an extra 10 L extension capability. The balls are then emptied into a graduated container in order to determine the equivalent volume in litres, with a margin of error of just a few %.

Weight

1.7 kg All inclusive.Weight of the removable rain cover 100 g

Air design

As with the MT900 UL line, the MT500 AIR range has a ventilated back structure with mesh fabric (net fabric) that helps the back to breathe and dries quickly. Rigidity is guaranteed by a reinforced frame. The back is adjustable with a release strap that’s easy and quick to use.

Materials

Polyamide main fabric 210D RS (Ripstop = increased resistance to tears), reinforced bag base (420Dx330D RS)

Recommended carry weight

According to the project for which this backpack was designed, we recommend you don’t load it above 15 kg. Then you can benefit from all its features. Moreover, it’s not recommended to carry a load greater than 20-25% of your own weight and put too much pressure on your back.

How to pack a backpack?

Put your bedding at the bottom. Put heavy gear (tent, camp stove, food) near your back. Store your clothing around it. A groundsheet or tent can be placed under the flap or under the bag if there isn't room inside. Keep your waterproof jacket and fleece to hand. Place small items for daily use (sun cream, map, glasses etc.) in the pockets. The water bladder can be placed in the compartment provided down the back.

How to use the multi-use straps?

The new range of MT500 AIR and MT900 UL bags has two straps with open aluminium buckles (on the lower part of the bag). These straps let you hook on a tent or mattress under the bag or on the barrel. If not in use, these straps can be stored (by pushing them inside) in the hidden pocket intended for this or detached and used elsewhere with the lark's head knot buckle.
