Questions & Answers

Question:

I'm confused about the torso lengths for this?

Answer:

When choosing the size of a hiking backpack, it’s important to take into account your body shape. The backpack size should be adapted to your back. It’s measured from the base of your neck to your hips and the grip of the stomach strap should be comfortable on your hips. How to accurately measure your torso for optimal backpack fit? To ascertain this crucial measurement, enlist the help of a friend and have a pliable tape measure on hand. Bend your head forward and locate the bony protrusion where your shoulder slope meets your neck—the 7th cervical (C7) vertebra, marking the top of your torso length. On either side of your body, run your hands down the ribcage to the apex of your hip bones (known as the iliac crest). Align your index fingers forward and your thumbs backward, creating an imaginary line between them. The point on your lumbar region where this line intersects is the base of your torso measurement. Maintain an upright posture, and ask your friend to measure the distance between the C7 and the imaginary line formed by your thumbs. This measurement constitutes your torso length.

Used this for the first time on a hike this weekend and was very impressed with how comfortable it is even while carrying a lot of weight. I like that it’s adjustable, and also designed especially for women. Lots of useful zip pockets. Only complaint is that you can’t keep a large bottle in the side bottle compartment and use poles as the bottle gets in the way, so used a half sized bottle in here.

Nice lighter weight womens back pack.

I was able to adjust and pack all that I needed into this back pack. It has plenty of straps and pockets to give versatility. One of those rucksacks which you learn better how to pack, more efficiently, every time you use it. I am quite a small lady (Size 8/10 UK 164cm tall). I was able to adjust the straps to make the harness and waist belt fit reasonably well and spread the load, so all the weight wasn't solely hanging on my shoulders and compressing my back. If I were smaller, I think I might look more towards a youths fit because it would be tricky to comfortably adjust for much smaller body. This is something those of us who are of smaller build (whether men or women) need to consider when buying a rucksack. The quality is good but it is lightweight, and therefore buckles etc are small and potentially open to crush damage. Comes with a rain cover, which I thought was a nice touch.

Big disappointment

None of the stores nearby had it in stock to try it on, so ordered online expecting the Decathlon quality of other items purchased for years now, but sadly the backpack ruined my one-day hike. Got back with sore shoulders and neck, mesh padding very cheaply made so rubbed into my skin. Hip fins extremely rigid, dug into my hips no matter how l tried to adjust them. Lid weirdly sewn on frame, keeps hitting back of neck. Not a beginner, l know how to adjust straps, distribute weight and compress pack. Totally surprised by how bad this backpack is, while not the cheapest in its range. Now struggling to return, as didn't keep the tags, so probably stuck with it.

Very satisfied, very good value for money, tested in the field in bivouacs, approved

Tested on an 8-day trek, loaded with an average of 10 kg, by my 1.55 m tall wife. Adjustable shoulder straps to XS. Very practical with its numerous pockets, the internal compression straps allowing you to open the bag wide without everything falling out.Small downside: the back adjustment moves a little (it goes up towards S) so I blocked it with a "Rilsan" collar on each side. No more problem.

excellentonly regrets: opening the 2 full-height side zippers impossible if poles positioned with the side grips.move each side zipper to the front of the bag outside the 2 grip straps for polesbag a little heavy, too bad!however, integrated structure and offset filling volume effective to avoid perspiration directly on the backmen's bag slightly dark -> TTBwomen's bag -> too light, risk of soiling

Lightweight and very functional (lots of pockets)

icon-circle-checkmark verified purchase

Lightweight, large enough, lots of independent bags, full opening of the bag for easy access to all things.

Air design

As with the MT900 UL line, the MT500 AIR range has a ventilated back structure with mesh fabric (net fabric) that helps the back to breathe and dries quickly. Rigidity is guaranteed by a reinforced frame. The back is adjustable with a release strap that’s easy and quick to use.

Recommended carry weight

According to the project for which this backpack was designed, we recommend you don’t load it above 15 kg. Then you can benefit from all its features. Moreover, it’s not recommended to carry a load greater than 20-25% of your own weight and put too much pressure on your back.

How to pack a backpack?

Put your bedding at the bottom. Put heavy gear (tent, camp stove, food) near your back. Store your clothing around it. A groundsheet or tent can be placed under the flap or under the bag if there isn't room inside. Keep your waterproof jacket and fleece to hand. Place small items for daily use (sun cream, map, glasses etc.) in the pockets. The water bladder can be placed in the compartment provided down the back.

How to use the multi-use straps?

The new range of MT500 AIR and MT900 UL bags has two straps with open aluminium buckles (on the lower part of the bag). These straps let you hook on a tent or mattress under the bag or on the barrel. If not in use, these straps can be stored (by pushing them inside) in the hidden pocket intended for this or detached and used elsewhere with the lark's head knot buckle.

Female body shape

Our women's models are adapted to their body shape (chest and hips) with a more open shoulder strap shape and a higher fitted belt for greater comfort and freedom of movement.

Product testing

All our backpacks undergo field tests by users who are representative of our target market under similar conditions to those you will encounter. To test, assess and validate products, our mission test connects the product manager responsible for the product design with individuals independent to DECATHLON. This backpack was tested by trekkers for 5 weeks in the Canary Islands, the Pyrenees and the Mont Blanc mountain range.
