SUSTAINABLY SOURCED MATERIALS

Organic and Recycled Textiles:

Recycled and Organic Textiles:

At Decathlon, we take the environment into account during every stage of a product’s life cycle, starting from the source. By sourcing recycled and organic materials, we reduce our environmental footprint.

  • Organic Cotton: Organic farming methods preserve biodiversity, soil fertility and reduce the risk of groundwater pollution associated with conventional cotton growing. Organic cotton farmers use seeds that are GMO-free and rely on natural fertilizers and pest control.
  • Recycled Cotton: Derived from fabric offcuts or clothes, we blend the fibers of recycled cotton with virgin cotton to create new fabric. By blending the old with the new we are cutting back on resource consumption.
  • Recycled Polyester: We recycle plastic bottles and fabric to produce our polyester, reducing the resources coming from fossil fuels, all while preserving the fabric's features. It's a win-win.
  • Recycled Plastic: Plastic is made from petrochemical resources. To reduce the use of these resources, we use recycled plastic whenever possbile.

MERINO WOOL: DESIGNED BY NATURE

MERINO WOOL: DESIGNED BY NATURE

Behind the Wool

Behind the Wool

Merino Wool is the perfect partner for all-season adventures. It’s warm, super soft, comfortable and breathable. And most importantly, Decathlon’s merino wool is sustainable and ethically sourced.

Benefits:

  • Renewable: Merino Wool is 100% biodegradable! And thanks to the high quality of its fibers—which are 6 times stronger than cotton—merino wool can be reused and recycled repeatedly.
  • Lightweight & Super Soft: 3 times finer than traditional wool, Merino wool is a softer, lighter, more comfortable wool, designed for adventure.
  • Temperature Regulating: Merino wool traps heat to keep you warm in cold weather, and wicks moistue to keep you cool in hot weather.
  • Antibacterial: Merino wool is naturally antimicrobial and safeguards against mildew and mold.
  • Odor Resistant: Merino wool’s breathablility, ability to wick moisture, and antibacterial properties add up to one thing: It smells fresh, no matter what you put it through.
  • Wrinkle Resistant: Because merino is highly elastic, wrinkles easily smooth out. No ironing necessary.

ECODESIGN: HOW OUR PRODUCTS ARE MADE

ECODESIGN: HOW OUR PRODUCTS ARE MADE

The Eco-Design Concept

Ecodesign Technology

Ecodesign aims to minimize a product's environmental impact from the early stages of design, through its entire life cycle. To achieve this, we must be environmentally conscious when designing our products. 77% of Decathlon Ecodesigned products are produced by one of these 3 technologies: Recycled polyester, Bi-ton, and Dope dyed.

Bi-Ton Technology:

Textile dyeing process requires a great deal of water but also generates sewage from dyeing vats. To reduce the environmental impact, we use only one mass-dyed thread out of two, reducing water usage.

  • Quechua MH100, Waterproof Camping Tent: A simple and easy to pitch 2 person tent, that we only dye 1 thread out of 2 to reduce the enviromental impact.
  • Quechua MH500, Folding Camping Chair: A Bi-Ton component, ultra-compact and lightweight camping chair to bring ultimate comfort.

Dope Dyed Technology:

Textile dyeing process requires a great deal of water but also generates sewage from dyeing vats. To reduce the environmental impact, we use only one mass-dyed thread out of two, reducing water usage.

  • Forclaz Trek 100 Eastfit, 70 L Hiking Backpack: An easily adjustable 70 L backpack used for multi-day mountain treks that is made with dope dyed polyester fabric and recycled plastic buckles.
  • Quechua Arpenaz, 50° Camping Sleeping Bag: A 50° F sleeping bag equipped with a full zipper for practical opening. Made with a Dope-Dyed two-tone liner fiber, to reduce the environmental impact.

Ecodesign Technology

Ecodesign is Decathlon’s commitment to create the highest quality products with a more environmentally-friendly approach. To achieve this, we utlize technology that reduces the use of resources.

Bi-Ton Technology:

The textile dyeing process requires a great deal of water and generates sewage from dyeing vats. To reduce our environmental impact, we use only one mass-dyed thread out of two, reducing water usage.

  • Quechua MH500, Folding Camping Chair: A Bi-Ton component, ultra-compact and lightweight camping chair desgined for comfort. Available in 2 sizes. Learn more.

Dope Dyed Technology:

To dye a fabric, it must be soaked in large quantities of water. To cut back on water consumption, we use the dope dyed technique. It's a process that involves adding the color pigments when the yarn itself is produced.

  • Quechua Arpenaz, Camping Sleeping Bags: Our ecodesign sleeping bags aren't just cozy and warm- they're made with a Dope-Dyed two-tone liner fiber. Learn more.
